North Ari is the administrative atoll of Alifu Alifu, lying west of Malé across a broad channel. Rasdhoo sits at its northeast tip. Inhabited islands with guesthouses include Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, Mathiveri and Feridhoo, and the farming island of Thoddoo just north is often grouped with the atoll.

01

North Ari in two minutes

North Ari is the administrative atoll of Alifu Alifu, west of Malé across a wide channel. Its administrative code letter is U, used on island signs and ferry boards. The atoll runs roughly north to south, with a lagoon, a rim reef and a scatter of uninhabited islands between the inhabited ones.

Rasdhoo sits at the northeast tip, closest to the channel that separates the atoll from North and South Malé. That position, with deep water close to the reef, is what makes the atoll's diving distinctive. Inhabited islands with guesthouses include Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, Mathiveri and Feridhoo.

Thoddoo, a farming island known for fruit, lies just north of the atoll and is often grouped with it in transfer routes and guesthouse listings. The atoll has both resort islands and local islands, so the choice of where to stay shapes the whole trip.

  • Usual transfer: seaplane in daylight, or a longer speedboat crossing to some islands.
  • Island types: resort islands, and inhabited islands with guesthouses.
  • Known for: thila dives, and early-morning hammerhead dives off Rasdhoo.

02

Getting there

North Ari is reached by seaplane from the seaplane terminal on the airport island, or by a longer speedboat crossing to some islands. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so an international arrival after dark means a first night near Malé or in Hulhumalé before the transfer the next morning.

The speedboat option suits some islands better than others, depending on distance and sea conditions. Crossings can be choppy during the southwest monsoon. Guesthouses and resorts arrange transfers and will confirm the current arrangements when you book.

Public ferries link islands within the atoll on set days, and some routes connect to Malé. Timetables change, so ask the guesthouse for the current ones rather than relying on an old schedule.

03

Rasdhoo and the hammerheads

Rasdhoo is an inhabited island at the northeast tip of the atoll, with guesthouses, a harbour and a village. Its outer reef drops into deep water close to shore, which is why dive centres based here run early-morning trips to the reef edge.

The draw is the chance of hammerhead sharks in the blue water off the reef, usually at first light. Encounters are never guaranteed. Currents, visibility and the season all affect whether sharks appear, and some mornings produce nothing. Dive centres will say honestly what conditions have been like.

Recreational diving in the Maldives is capped at 30 metres, and the hammerhead dives are run within that limit. Divers should be comfortable in current and able to descend and hold a position in blue water. A check dive with the centre is usual before joining deeper trips.

Check before you goHammerhead trips are usually booked a day ahead and depend on conditions. Ask the dive centre about depth, current and the minimum experience they require before you commit.

04

The inhabited islands

Ukulhas is an inhabited island with guesthouses, a long beach and a reef close to shore. It has a reputation for organised waste management and clean beaches, and it is one of the easier local islands in the atoll to base a stay on. Swimwear is for designated beaches only.

Mathiveri sits on the western side of the atoll, with guesthouses and access to nearby sandbanks and reefs. Feridhoo is smaller and quieter, with guesthouses and village life. On all of these islands, shoulders and knees are covered in the village, and alcohol is not available.

Thoddoo, just north, is a farming island known for fruit, including papaya and watermelon. It is often grouped with North Ari in transfer routes. Importing alcohol and pork into the country is not allowed, and during Ramadan eating and drinking in public in daylight is avoided on local islands.

  • Mathiveri. West side, guesthouses, sandbanks and reefs nearby.
  • Feridhoo. Smaller and quieter, guesthouses and village life.
  • Thoddoo. Farming island north of the atoll, known for fruit.

05

Thilas and reef diving

A thila is a submerged reef pinnacle, a column of coral that rises from deeper water but does not break the surface. North Ari has several, and they are the classic dive sites here. Fish gather around them, and grey reef sharks and trevally are common on the current-swept sides.

Diving is capped at 30 metres under Maldivian regulations. Many thila dives are planned shallower than that, working the top of the pinnacle where light and fish are concentrated. Currents can be strong, and dive centres time entries around the tide.

Touching or standing on coral, collecting coral or shells, and feeding fish all harm the reef, and taking coral or shells out of the country is not allowed. Buoyancy control matters more here than almost anywhere, because the sites are small and heavily visited.

06

When to go

The year turns on two monsoons. Iruvai, the northeast monsoon, runs roughly from December to April and is drier and calmer. Hulhangu, the southwest monsoon, runs roughly from May to November, with more wind, passing showers and choppier crossings. Air and sea stay warm all year.

For diving, the southwest monsoon brings more plankton and often more activity on the reef, at the cost of visibility and comfort on the boat. The northeast monsoon tends to give calmer seas and clearer water. Neither season guarantees sharks.

Surf is roughly March to October, with the biggest swells around June to August. The northeast monsoon months bring smaller, cleaner waves on some breaks. Surfers should check with local operators about which breaks suit their level.

07

Practical notes

Resort islands serve alcohol and arrange transfers for guests. Local islands do not serve alcohol, and swimwear is only for designated beaches, often called bikini beaches. Friday midday prayers close many businesses on inhabited islands.

Public ferries run between islands on set days, and guesthouses know the current timetables. A fee is charged for some excursions, transfers and marine park visits, and rates change, so confirm with your host rather than budgeting from an old figure.

Malé is the capital, a small, dense city island, and Hulhumalé is a reclaimed island next to the airport. A bridge links Malé with the airport island, which makes a day in the city straightforward if your transfer leaves a gap.

Check before you goFerry days, excursion fees and dive schedules change. Confirm the current timetable and any charges with your guesthouse or dive centre before you plan the week.
