South Ari Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu, lies west of Malé. Its southern rim is the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen through the year. The atoll has many resort islands and a handful of inhabited islands with guesthouses, including Dhigurah and Dhangethi.

01

South Ari in brief

South Ari Atoll is the southern half of the Ari atoll pair, west of Malé.Its Dhivehi name is Alifu Dhaalu. Its administrative code letter is I, used on island signs and ferry boards. The atoll is long and narrow, with a chain of resort islands along its eastern and western rims and a few inhabited islands in between.

The southern rim is the South Ari Marine Protected Area. This is where whale sharks are seen through the year, mostly juveniles. The protected area covers a stretch of reef and channel where the sharks come to feed and move through. Several resorts and guesthouses run snorkelling and diving trips to the area, under a code of conduct.

Manta cleaning stations also exist in the atoll, where reef mantas visit to be cleaned by small fish. These are not as famous as the feeding sites elsewhere, but they give another reason to spend time in the water. The atoll has many resort islands, and a growing number of guesthouses on inhabited islands.

  • Whale sharks: seen through the year in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, mostly juveniles.
  • Manta cleaning stations: present in the atoll, visited by reef mantas.
  • Inhabited islands: Dhigurah and Dhangethi have guesthouses; Maamigili has the domestic airport.

Getting to South Ari

South Ari is reached by seaplane or by domestic flight to Maamigili, followed by a boat. Seaplanes leave from the terminal on the airport island and fly in daylight only. The flight to South Ari is roughly 25 to 40 minutes, depending on the island. If your international flight lands after dark, plan a first night near Malé or in Hulhumalé.

Scheduled domestic flights land at Maamigili, inside the atoll. From there, a speedboat or dhoni takes you to your island. This is the usual route for guesthouse stays on Dhigurah and Dhangethi, and some resorts use it as well. The boat leg can take around 1.5 to 2 hours to the southern islands, depending on conditions.

Public ferries link some inhabited islands within the atoll on set days, but timetables change. Guesthouses know the current ones. Resorts arrange transfers for their guests, and the resort will confirm the details when you book.

03

Whale sharks and the MPA

The South Ari Marine Protected Area covers the southern rim of the atoll. Whale sharks are seen there through the year, mostly juveniles. They feed near the surface, which makes snorkelling encounters possible as well as diving ones. Several operators run trips from resorts and guesthouses, and the area is patrolled to enforce the code of conduct.

The code of conduct asks boats to keep a distance, limit speed and avoid blocking the shark's path. Snorkellers and divers should not touch the sharks, chase them or use flash photography. These rules protect the sharks and make encounters calmer for everyone.

Manta cleaning stations elsewhere in the atoll are visited by reef mantas, which come to be cleaned by small fish. These stations are not always as reliable as the whale shark area, but they add variety to a diving or snorkelling week.

  • Keep a distance. Do not touch, chase or block a whale shark's path.
  • No flash. Flash photography is not allowed around the sharks.
  • Licensed operators. Trips run with operators who follow the code of conduct.
  • Snorkel or dive. Both encounters happen, but snorkelling is common near the surface.
Check before you goRules and access to the South Ari Marine Protected Area are set by the relevant authorities and can change. Check with your resort, guesthouse or dive centre for the current code of conduct before you join a trip.

04

Where to stay

South Ari has many resort islands, each occupying its own island. Resorts serve alcohol, arrange transfers and usually have a house reef and a dive centre. Some are close to the whale shark area, which shortens boat trips. Others sit on quieter reefs or near manta cleaning stations.

Inhabited islands offer a different stay. Dhigurah is a long, thin island with a sandbank at one end and guesthouses along its length. Dhangethi is smaller but also has guesthouses. On these islands, alcohol is not served, and swimwear is only for designated beaches. Shoulders and knees are covered in the village.

Maamigili, with the domestic airport, is the transport hub. It has guesthouses and basic services. Staying there suits travellers who want easy access to the airport or who plan to move between islands.

05

When to go

The year turns on two monsoons. Iruvai, the northeast monsoon, runs roughly from December to April and is drier and calmer. Hulhangu, the southwest monsoon, runs roughly from May to November, with more wind, passing showers and choppier crossings. Air and sea stay warm all year.

Whale sharks are seen through the year in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, so no single season is best for them. The calmer months make boat crossings more comfortable, especially for the longer trips to the southern rim. The windier months can bring better conditions for surfing on some reef breaks, but the atoll is not a major surf destination.

Manta cleaning stations are visited at various times, and the resort or dive centre can say when they are most active. For general weather patterns, the northeast monsoon is the drier half of the year.

06

Getting around the atoll

Inside the atoll, boats do the work. Resorts run their own transfer boats and excursion dhoni. Guesthouses arrange speedboat trips to the whale shark area, sandbanks and reefs. Public ferries link some inhabited islands on set days, but they are slow and not always daily.

Distances within South Ari can be long, especially between the northern and southern ends. A trip to the whale shark area from a northern island can take an hour or more by speedboat. Staying on a southern island or a nearby resort shortens the journey.

Sea conditions affect crossings, and mornings are often calmer. If you plan to visit the marine protected area, check the boat schedule and allow flexibility. Your guesthouse or resort will know the current timings.

Check before you goPublic ferry timetables in South Ari change and are not always frequent. Guesthouses know the current schedules. If you rely on ferries, build in extra days and confirm times locally before travelling.
