From the site's North Malé Atoll guide: Thulusdhoo, Huraa, Himmafushi and Dhiffushi are inhabited islands with guesthouses. They have villages, mosques, schools and harbours, and a different rhythm from resort islands. Alcohol is not served on these islands, and swimwear is only for designated beaches, often called bikini beaches. In the village, shoulders and knees are covered. Thulusdhoo is known for its surf break and for a small island industry. Himmafushi also sits beside a well-known surf break. Huraa is close to the airport and has a quiet harbour and guesthouses. Dhiffushi lies further north and has beaches and guesthouses. All four are reached by speedboat from the airport or Malé. Read the guide.

South Malé Atoll is the southern part of Kaafu, the administrative atoll that also contains North Malé. The two halves are divided by a deep channel. On island signs and ferry boards the atoll carries the administrative code letter H (used on island signs and ferry boards). Read the guide.

The atoll runs roughly north to south, with a lagoon, a rim reef and a scatter of uninhabited islands between the inhabited ones. Read the guide.

South Ari Atoll

25 bookable stays: 13 resort islands and 12 local-island guesthouses. Transfers: long boat ride or flight (6), seaplane (13) and domestic flight + boat (6). Islands named in the records: Machchafushi, Dhidhoofinolhu, Mandhoo, Huvahendhoo, Nalaguraidhoo, Noovilu, Dhigurah and Omadhoo.

From the site's South Ari Atoll guide: South Ari has many resort islands, each occupying its own island. Resorts serve alcohol, arrange transfers and usually have a house reef and a dive centre. Some are close to the whale shark area, which shortens boat trips. Others sit on quieter reefs or near manta cleaning stations. Inhabited islands offer a different stay. Dhigurah is a long, thin island with a sandbank at one end and guesthouses along its length. Dhangethi is smaller but also has guesthouses. On these islands, alcohol is not served, and swimwear is only for designated beaches. Shoulders and knees are covered in the village. Read the guide.

Life on these islands follows the usual pattern: guesthouses, mosques, schools, a harbour and a designated bikini beach for visitors. The atoll's shape matters more than its size. The eastern rim is cut by channels where currents run strong, and those channels are why divers come. The western side is shallower and more sheltered. Read the guide.

The reef channels of Lhaviyani are the main reason divers come. Currents sweep through these channels and bring nutrients, and drift dives along the channel edges are the usual pattern. The Maldives regulations cap recreational diving at 30 metres, and dive centres in the atoll plan profiles within that limit. Read the guide.

From the site's Raa Atoll guide: A northern atoll of wide lagoons and newer resort islands, reached by seaplane in daylight or by a domestic flight to Ifuru followed by a boat. The atoll is built around large lagoons. Shallow water stretches between the reefs, and the islands are scattered across it rather than lined up in a single chain. That shape gives the atoll its character: long horizons, sheltered water and plenty of room between islands. Read the guide.

From the site's Laamu Atoll guide: Laamu is the administrative atoll of Hadhdhunmathi, in the south of the Maldives. It is one of the quieter atolls, with few resorts and a large share of inhabited islands where daily life goes on much as it does elsewhere in the country. The atoll is known for its seagrass beds and the turtles that feed on them. Laamu has few resorts, and most of its accommodation is on inhabited islands. Guesthouses on the linked eastern islands and on other inhabited islands give access to village life, local cafes and the causeway road. On inhabited islands alcohol is not available, and swimwear belongs on the designated beaches rather than in the villages. Read the guide.

Its Dhivehi name is Seenu, and its administrative code letter S (used on island signs and ferry boards) marks it on maps and timetables. The atoll is a ring of reefs and islands around a lagoon, with a wide passage on its western side. The surf season is roughly March to October, with the biggest swells around June to August. The northeast monsoon months bring smaller, cleaner waves on some breaks. Addu has reef breaks, but check with local surfers or guesthouses for conditions. Read the guide.

How this list was made

The list comes from a live sample of the IMPT platform search, the one the booking app uses, run from centres across every atoll on 5 sample stays. A stay appears here only if the search returned it, and each page says on how many of the sampled dates. Facilities, photos and guest reviews come from the IMPT hotel database; transfers and distances are worked out from coordinates; sea, season and island context comes from this site's own atoll and things-to-do pages.

Questions about island stays

What is on this page?

Every Maldives stay the IMPT booking search returned in a live sample of every atoll: 283 properties across 21 atolls and island groups, each with a decision page built from its own record.

How was bookability checked?

A live sample of the booking search ran from centres covering every atoll on 5 sample stays (Monday check-ins across the next four months, one with two nights). 140 of the 283 stays came back on every date searched near them; each page shows its own "seen bookable on N of M sampled dates" result.

Why are there no prices?

Rates change by date, party and meal plan, so this site shows none. Every Check dates button opens the live rate for your exact dates on app.impt.io in a new tab.

What is the difference between a resort island and a local island?

A resort island is one island, one property: alcohol is served, swimwear is normal and transfers are arranged. A local island is an inhabited village with guesthouses: no alcohol, swimwear on the designated bikini beach, shoulders and knees covered in the village.

How do transfers work?

92 stays are within speedboat range of the airport, 26 local-island stays sit a long shared speedboat or ferry ride out (or a domestic flight and a boat), 69 resorts are usually reached by seaplane, 55 stays by a domestic flight and a boat, and 41 stays are on the city islands by the airport. Seaplanes fly in daylight only.

Which atolls have mantas or whale sharks?

Mantas feed at Hanifaru Bay in Baa in the southwest monsoon, broadly May to November, and gather at Lankan Manta Point in North Malé. Whale sharks are seen along the southern rim of South Ari in any month. Use the Sea experience filter.

Is there a filter for a house reef or overwater villas?

Only where the record proves it: the filters use guest reviews that mention a house reef or overwater villas. A stay without such a mention may still have one, so check its decision page and ask the property.

How is this different from the hotels section?

The hotels section lists every property in the IMPT hotel database. Island stays lists only the stays the live booking search returned, ranked by how often, and every page leads with a decision summary, transfer, island rules, beach and reef evidence, nearby sea sites and a comparison with similar stays.
